Modern Adaptations of Homer's Odyssey Span Film, TV and Streaming
Filmmakers and showrunners continue to draw on Homer's Odyssey, producing recent movies, series and even a web series that reinterpret the ancient tale for contemporary audiences.
Director Christopher Nolan told the newspaper that Homer's Odyssey serves as his foundational text, noting that its themes appear throughout his work. The poem, which follows the Greek hero Odysseus on his ten-year return to Ithaca after the Trojan War, remains a frequent source for modern narratives. Recent direct adaptations include Uberto Pasolini's 2024 film "The Return," featuring Ralph Fiennes as Odysseus and Juliette Binoche as Penelope, and Mario Camerini's 1955 movie "Ulysses," starring Kirk Douglas. Television versions have also drawn on the epic, such as the 1997 NBC miniseries "The Odyssey," the 2007-2011 web series "Star Trek Odyssey," and a 2002 parody by "The Simpsons."
