John Nuar and his wife in Canton, Michigan, spent about $120,000 to place their father, who had dementia, in a private memory-care facility, Business Insider reported. They first built a home in the suburb to accommodate their father’s needs. After moving him from Virginia, they transferred him to the specialized facility.

The couple covered the entire cost out of pocket. Business Insider noted that the total expense amounted to roughly $120,000 over a three-year period.
