Maine Democrats Rush to Choose Senate Nominee After Platner Withdrawal
Maine Democrats are organizing a rapid delegate convention to replace former Senate candidate Graham Platner, with dozens of candidates scrambling for signatures and delegate support ahead of a July 25 vote in Bangor.
Maine Democrats are convening 601 delegates in Bangor on July 25 to select a new Senate nominee after Graham Platner withdrew following a rape allegation he denies. Most delegates – about 500 – will be chosen at county meetings this weekend, while 101 are automatic members of the state party committee. At least eight candidates are racing to collect the 500 signatures required for ballot eligibility, including 50 signatures from eight separate counties, before a 5 p.m. Wednesday deadline.
Former state Senate president Troy Jackson, who launched his campaign with endorsements from more than 50 elected officials, emphasized that the progressive movement in Maine extends beyond any single individual. > “You poured your hearts, your time and your energy into building this movement alongside another candidate in Maine, and I know there’s real pain, anger and disappointment, and I’m not going to try and minimize that. But look, this movement has always been bigger than one person.”
Other candidates, such as Jordan Wood, warned of the challenges posed by the unprecedented situation. > “We are in a perilous situation, and there is no perfect way to deal with an unprecedented situation like this.”
Campaigns are mobilizing volunteers to gather signatures and recruit delegates, with former gubernatorial candidates Nirav Shah and Shenna Bellows relying heavily on existing volunteer networks. Shah’s campaign manager said the team “never stood down” and quickly met the signature threshold. Bellows is reaching out to “super volunteers” from her prior campaign to secure delegate support.
The process, which involves a far smaller electorate than a traditional primary, requires intensive personal outreach. Party officials reported receiving more than 5,500 delegate applications so far. The deadline to submit the final nominee’s name for the November ballot is July 27, two days after the convention.
While some national progressive figures have endorsed Jackson, others, including Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, have withheld endorsements pending the convention outcome. Illinois Senators Tammy Duckworth and Dick Durbin have publicly opposed Shah’s candidacy.
The race unfolds amid broader political events, with candidates balancing in-person rallies and targeted outreach as they seek to secure the delegate base that will determine Maine’s next Senate contender.
