The Sunday Times reported that Cottrell, previously convicted in the United States for money-laundering and fraud, provided Farage with a luxury London townhouse, paid staff to manage his propaganda machine on social media, and covered his security costs before he became an MP.
This investigation comes after earlier reports that Farage accepted a staggering £5 million donation from crypto entrepreneur Christopher Harborne just before launching his campaign for the 2024 general election. Public records reveal Farage has raked in more than £2 million in outside earnings—second only to one other MP—raising serious questions about the influence of dark money in British politics.
Despite these damning facts, Reform UK Treasury spokesman Robert Jenrick attempted to downplay the scandal, telling the BBC that no rules were broken and claiming the support was “purely personal” and thus exempt from disclosure. Farage’s spokesperson dismissed the allegations as “baseless and contrived,” a familiar refrain from those caught exploiting loopholes for personal gain.
Should the standards committee find Farage guilty of breaching parliamentary rules, he could be suspended from the House, potentially triggering a by-election. Meanwhile, Reform UK’s recent local-election gains have failed to materialize into real power, as the party lost two by-elections this year to the more progressive Green Party and Labour, underscoring the public’s rejection of Farage’s brand of politics.
