Trump to Hold Press Conference at NATO Summit Amid Calls for Higher Defense Spending and Turkey Support

President Donald Trump is scheduled to hold a press conference on the final day of the NATO summit in Ankara, following a series of U.S. airstrikes on Iran that NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg described as "absolutely necessary" in response to Iranian attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

During the two-day summit, Trump reiterated his demand that NATO members allocate at least 5% of their gross domestic product to defense, criticizing countries he says are not meeting the alliance’s financial commitments. He also highlighted the United States' relationship with Turkey, describing the two nations as "better friends" than some traditional NATO partners, and announced plans to ease sanctions on Turkey and consider its re-entry into the F-35 fighter jet program.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan received praise from Trump, who said he had "no concerns" about Turkey’s leadership. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen responded to Trump’s comments on Greenland, stating that the territory is not for sale and emphasizing Denmark’s right to self-determination and sovereignty.

The summit also addressed rising tensions with Iran after Tehran struck tankers in the Hormuz Strait, prompting the United States to revoke a license allowing Iranian oil sales, a key element of ongoing negotiations. Trump met with several world leaders on the sidelines, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and commented on the conflict in Ukraine, indicating that a resolution may eventually emerge.
