NATO Announces Multibillion-Dollar Defense Projects Ahead of Trump Visit

Summary

At a summit in Ankara, NATO unveiled new procurement plans, including surveillance aircraft and drones, to demonstrate increased defense spending by member states.

NATO used a forum in Ankara on Tuesday to present a series of multibillion-dollar procurement initiatives aimed at converting recent defense spending into operational capability. Secretary-General Mark Rutte told ministers and industry officials that the alliance must turn economic resources into "cash to work from defense plans to drones, from money to missiles and interceptors."

Swedish manufacturer Saab was announced as the supplier of up to ten GlobalEye surveillance aircraft for a ten-nation consortium, a deal described by Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson as a "moment of great pride" for the alliance. NATO also disclosed a four-country effort to acquire up to five Triton surveillance drones and a multinational purchase of Airbus air-to-air refueling and transport planes.

U.S. Undersecretary of Defense Michael Duffy said the United States will seek to increase exports and partner with European production capacity to meet the demand for equipment. While the announcements were presented as part of a broader push to meet NATO’s 3.5% GDP defense-spending target, specific monetary values were not disclosed.

The summit coincides with President Donald Trump’s scheduled visit to Turkey, during which he has expressed criticism of NATO’s reliance on U.S. leadership. Separate discussions at the meeting touched on the potential resumption of F-35 sales to Turkey, a proposal opposed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who warned it could alter the regional power balance.

Protests in Ankara were quickly contained, and a small number of demonstrators were detained. The alliance’s agenda emphasizes a stronger European contribution to collective defense, aligning with the Pentagon’s “NATO 3.0” concept that envisions greater European responsibility while the United States focuses on other strategic priorities.
