Messi says Argentina must address numerous shortcomings after extra-time win
Lionel Messi warned Argentina that many errors need fixing after a 3-2 extra-time victory over Cape Verde, as the team prepares for a Round of 16 match against Egypt.
Argentina defeated Cape Verde 3-2 in extra time on Friday, advancing to the World Cup round of 16 where they will face Egypt on July 7. Lionel Messi said the team showed both strong moments and many mistakes that must be corrected before the next match. > "We put in a huge effort, as always, playing well and playing badly. The important thing now is to rest, think about what’s coming next and try to take positives from today’s game. Beyond just qualifying, we did some good things, and we also need to correct the bad ones, which were many today as well," Messi told reporters, according to ESPN.
Messi opened the scoring in the 29th minute, but Cape Verde equalised before halftime and later forced extra time. Argentina secured the win after an own goal by Diney Borges following a corner kick in the 111th minute. Messi praised Cape Verde for challenging Argentina and highlighted the team's loss of possession and inability to press effectively. > "We knew it was going to be a very tough match… we lost the ball, we sat back, we couldn’t pressure them well, and they struck with their strengths," he said.
Scaloni, Argentina’s manager, indicated that the team will review the performance to address the identified weaknesses. The victory keeps Argentina among the tournament favorites, second only to France in betting odds.
