Anonymous Polymarket User Stakes $400,000 on Putin Not Holding Office After 2026

Summary

An unidentified bettor on the Polymarket platform wagered $400,000 that Vladimir Putin will no longer be Russia’s president by the end of 2026, raising questions about regulation of political prediction markets.

An anonymous participant on the cryptocurrency-based prediction market Polymarket placed a $400,000 bet that Vladimir Putin will not be Russia’s president at the close of 2026. The user’s profile displayed a Ukrainian flag, but no further identifying information was disclosed.

The wager comes as the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) reviews proposed rules that would prohibit certain types of prediction-market bets deemed contrary to the public interest or vulnerable to insider manipulation. The draft regulations, released last month, target markets linked to wars, terrorist attacks and political assassinations, though they have not yet been finalized and it is unclear whether the Putin bet would be covered.

Recent enforcement actions have highlighted concerns about insider betting on geopolitical events. In April, a U.S. Special Forces soldier was charged with using classified information to win more than $400,000 on Polymarket bets related to Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. The Department of Justice said the soldier placed 13 bets shortly before a raid aimed at capturing Maduro, earning roughly $409,881. Around the same time, prediction-market platform Kalshi suspended three political candidates who had bet on the outcomes of their own elections.

Regulators and market operators are monitoring these developments as they consider how to balance free-market betting with safeguards against the misuse of confidential information.
