Iran to Hold Multi-City Funeral for Late Supreme Leader Khamenei
Iran announced a week-long series of funeral ceremonies for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, slated to begin Friday and take place in several Iranian and Iraqi cities.
Iranian authorities said the funeral rites for the late supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will start on Friday and continue for nearly a week, with events scheduled in at least five cities across Iran and Iraq. Officials expect tens of millions of participants.
The ceremonies come more than four months after Khamenei was killed in February during the early phase of the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran, and six months after nationwide protests that called for an end to his administration.
Khamenei, who led Iran for almost four decades, oversaw a period marked by significant political repression, including the imprisonment and execution of dissidents, as well as increasing control of the country’s wealth by security forces.
