The U.S. Justice Department has taken a stand for liberty, suing Virginia and California for their recent gun-control measures that blatantly violate the Second Amendment.
The Justice Department announced Wednesday that it has filed separate lawsuits to protect Americans’ constitutional rights against overreaching gun-control laws in Virginia and California. The Virginia suit targets a draconian law banning the sale of automatic weapons and, outrageously, restricting the purchase of popular semi-automatic rifles like the AR-15—firearms owned by millions of law-abiding citizens. In California, the DOJ is fighting to block a radical new prohibition on certain pistols that can be converted to fire like a machine gun and to end enforcement of the state’s oppressive 'Handgun Roster,' which arbitrarily limits which firearms may be sold.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche reaffirmed the nation’s founding principles, declaring that the Constitution is 'not a suggestion' and that the Second Amendment is a 'sacred right' for all Americans, including those living under California’s anti-gun regime.
The department’s filings rightly argue that Virginia’s ban on commercial sales of AR-15-style rifles is a direct assault on constitutional freedoms, describing the law as part of a disturbing pattern of government overreach depriving citizens of lawful gun ownership. In California, the DOJ contends that the Glock ban and the handgun roster are unlawful restrictions on the rights of responsible gun owners.
These lawsuits come as the Supreme Court, with a renewed respect for the Constitution, prepares to consider whether the Second Amendment guarantees the right to possess AR-15-style rifles, reviewing two cases that challenge state and local attempts to strip Americans of their fundamental rights.
