FBI Determines Ransom Notes Tied to Nancy Guthrie Disappearance Were Fabricated

Summary

The FBI has concluded that ransom letters linked to the missing NBC anchor Savannah Guthrie's mother were counterfeit, according to a Reuters report.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has assessed that the ransom notes associated with the disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie were not genuine, Reuters reported on Tuesday. The assessment follows a series of letters received by media outlet TMZ, which turned them over to the FBI for analysis. While most of the notes arrived early in the investigation, a later letter was also submitted, though its contents were not disclosed.

According to TMZ, the agency received nearly a dozen emails from an individual claiming to know the kidnapper’s identity and the victim’s location, and demanding one bitcoin in exchange for that information. The FBI’s review found the communications to be fabricated.

Earlier in the case, investigators had received a demand for a $4 million ransom a day after Guthrie’s disappearance, and a second note on February 6 that alleged the victim was dead. Savannah Guthrie, the daughter and NBC News anchor, addressed the reports on the "Today" show, stating she had no comment on the notes and urging anyone with information to come forward.
