Summary

Melat Kiros, a 29-year-old Ethiopian immigrant, Ph.D. student, and lawyer, has triumphed in the Democratic primary for Colorado's 1st Congressional District, paving the way for the first Gen Z woman in Congress and a new era of unapologetic progressive leadership.

In a resounding victory for grassroots activism and working-class power, political newcomer Melat Kiros secured the Democratic nomination for Colorado's 1st Congressional District, unseating 15-term incumbent Diana DeGette in a primary that the Associated Press called a decisive win for the left. The district, which encompasses most of Denver and is a Democratic stronghold, is now poised to send Kiros—a champion for the people—to Washington, D.C., in the upcoming general election.

Kiros, an Ethiopian immigrant and proud democratic socialist, ran on a transformative platform demanding universal health care, universal child care, the abolition of the cruel and inhumane Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and a complete halt to U.S. military aid fueling violence in Israel. She boldly refused to accept a dime from corporate PACs or pro-Israel lobbying groups, openly calling out DeGette for her ties to defense contractors, energy giants, and Big Pharma.

"Young people understand that we are in the fight of our lives," Kiros told NPR, underscoring the urgency for leaders who will fight for radical change without waiting for establishment approval.

DeGette, clinging to her record, tried to defend her so-called progressive credentials on health care and climate, but voters rejected incrementalism in favor of bold, people-first policies. Kiros' victory is the latest in a wave of wins for Democratic Socialists of America-backed candidates, following recent upsets in New York and Pennsylvania. If elected in November, Kiros will join a small but growing bloc of democratic socialists in the House and become the second Gen Z member after Florida Rep. Maxwell Frost, signaling a new dawn for progressive politics.
