Democratic Socialists Sweep Colorado Primary, Unseating DeGette and Nominating Weiser
Democratic socialist Melat Kiros defeated long-time incumbent Rep. Diana DeGette in the Democratic primary for Colorado’s 1st Congressional District, while Attorney General Phil Weiser secured the party’s nomination for governor. NPR reported that the 29-year-old Ph. D. student and lawyer’s victory positions her to become the first Gen Z woman elected to Congress.
Al Jazeera echoed the result, noting Kiros’s win over the 15-term representative and her upcoming challenge in the November general election. Later, NPR added that Weiser’s win in the same primary round completed the Democratic ticket for the statewide governor’s race. The attorney general’s nomination follows his tenure as Colorado’s top law-enforcement official. Both outcomes set the stage for a competitive November contest across the state.
