Trump's family crypto ventures generate $1.4 billion profit as investors incur billions in losses

Donald Trump and his sons earned more than $1.4 billion from their cryptocurrency businesses in 2025, while data shows billions of dollars lost by retail investors in the same schemes.

President Donald Trump opened the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq remotely on Monday to promote a new savings program for newborns, but his administration’s involvement in cryptocurrency has drawn scrutiny. Data from crypto analytics firm Nansen indicates that the Trump family’s crypto firm, World Liberty Financial, generated over $1.4 billion in profit in 2025, the most lucrative year of Trump’s business career.

Investors report substantial losses. One California software engineer told Reuters her $2,000 investment in the $TRUMP meme coin fell to less than $120 within five months, and broader data show that roughly two-thirds of buyers of the coin have lost money, amounting to $3.81 billion in total losses as of late June. Another Nansen analysis found that 85 % of purchasers of a World Liberty token were in the red.

World Liberty Financial was launched in late 2024 during Trump’s third presidential campaign. A company linked to an Abu Dhabi royal reportedly purchased nearly half of the firm for $187 million shortly before Trump’s inauguration, according to a Wall Street Journal report. The same period saw the unveiling of a Trump-branded meme coin that reportedly earned the family about $636 million last year.

Critics have highlighted potential conflicts of interest. The Trump administration responded to inquiries from The Independent that there are “no conflicts of interest” regarding the president’s business activities. Trump told CNBC that he was unaware of the details of the crypto earnings and asserted that “there’s nothing illegal. There’s nothing wrong with it.”

The cryptocurrency market overall has entered a downturn, with prices for Trump-related tokens falling alongside a broader sector-wide “crypto winter.”
