President Joe Biden addressed a crowd at a Maryland Democratic Party gala on Saturday, describing former President Donald Trump as a “loser” and saying the controversy surrounding the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool illustrates what he called the Trump administration’s “vanity projects.”
Biden noted that the Reflecting Pool has been the focus of repeated disputes, with Trump alleging that the Biden and Obama administrations spent more than $100 million on renovations—a figure that does not align with reported costs. The Associated Press documented that the 2012 renovation under Obama amounted to about $34 million and did not prevent recurring algae problems. During Biden’s term, the National Park Service estimated a full rehabilitation could cost roughly $100 million, but the plan was not pursued.
“The drama over the Reflecting Pool is a symptom of corruption and vanity in Washington,” Biden said.
The former president, who was diagnosed with late-stage prostate cancer last year, did not discuss his health during the brief ten-minute remarks. The Reflecting Pool debate has become a recurring point of contention between the two leaders, with Trump previously accusing Biden of mismanagement and threatening legal action against media outlets for coverage of the issue.
