Algae bloom contaminates Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool after Trump-led renovation

The reflecting pool beneath the Lincoln Memorial, recently resurfaced with a dark-blue coating as part of a $14.7 million renovation announced by President Donald Trump, developed a visible green algae bloom on Monday. The discoloration and odor attracted tourists who photographed the site and media crews who reported on the condition of the water.

"We had vandalism. It’s not a lot of damage, but we’ll probably have to let the water out and re-fix it," President Trump told reporters in the Oval Office, adding that five individuals had been arrested and five were under investigation.

The renovation was carried out by Virginia-based Atlantic Industrial Coatings under a no-bid contract. The company said that the repairs required after the bloom involved only a small portion of the overall seven-acre project and did not indicate a failure of the new liner.

Visitors described the pool as murky and noted floating debris, algae, and a duck in the water. Tour guide José Lebron, who works near the site, said the pool was originally intended to provide a reflective space linking the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial, but the current condition has shifted public attention to the quality of the renovation.

Law enforcement officials reported that a 300-foot gash in the pool and alleged chemical contamination were being investigated as possible acts of sabotage. Former Olympic canoeist David Hearn, one of those arrested, denied the charges.

The incident occurs as the administration addresses other national issues, including diplomatic negotiations and economic concerns. Critics have highlighted the symbolic significance of the reflecting pool, but officials have emphasized ongoing efforts to restore the water feature.
