Burnham wins Makerfield seat, vows to challenge Starmer for Labour leadership

Labour mayor Andy Burnham won the Makerfield by-election with about 55% of the vote, defeating Reform UK candidate Rob Kenyon and positioning himself as a potential challenger to Prime Minister Keir Starmer for the party’s leadership. Burnham’s victory speech emphasized the need for a new direction for Britain and hinted at a possible leadership contest.

Starmer responded on the social platform X, thanking voters and stating that he will run and will not step aside if a leadership ballot is called. He added that he remains committed to the mandate for change his government received.

The result has intensified speculation within Labour, with several MPs and former officials calling for Starmer to consider an orderly transition. Former deputy leader Harriet Harman suggested on a podcast that Burnham could become prime minister and that Starmer might leave office.

Political analysts noted that Burnham’s win strengthens his standing within the party and could halt the rise of Reform UK in northern constituencies. Professor Rob Ford of the University of Manchester said the victory demonstrates Burnham’s unique appeal to voters.

Burnham is expected to be sworn in as a Member of Parliament early next week and is likely to seek a meeting with Starmer to discuss the party’s future. Labour lawmaker Louise Haigh, a supporter of Burnham, urged Starmer to consider a managed transition.

Under Labour rules, a leadership challenge can be triggered if at least one-fifth of Labour MPs back a contender, a threshold of 81 MPs. The outcome of any forthcoming contest will determine whether Starmer remains prime minister or is replaced without a general election.
