Boyle Heights Cold-Storage Blaze Extinguished, Cleanup Hampered by Rotting Food Odors
Los Angeles firefighters battled a multi-day fire at a cold-storage warehouse in Boyle Heights, while city officials ordered a shelter-in-place for nearby residents. ABC7 Los Angeles reported that the blaze, which involved solar panels, prompted the shelter-in-place order and that water-dropping helicopters were deployed to contain the flames. Later, Mayor Karen Bass declared a local emergency as the fire entered its fourth and fifth days, prompting air-quality alerts, school relocations and a request for additional resources, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The department said the fire was expected to be out by the end of the week. By the end of the week, firefighters had extinguished the blaze, but the cleanup revealed rotting meat and strong odors that raised health concerns for residents, the Los Angeles Times reported.
