Giants controversy over Bible verses on Pride Night caps draws criticism
The Guardian reported that Major League Baseball warned San Francisco Giants pitchers after they wrote Bible verses on caps during a Pride Night game. U. S. Senator Josh Hawley subsequently wrote to Commissioner Rob Manfred seeking clarification of the league’s uniform policy, citing concerns about religious discrimination.
The Department of Justice then opened an investigation into MLB, alleging possible violations of players’ religious rights. Four Giants pitchers later told the San Francisco Chronicle they felt no pressure and described their actions as personal expressions of faith. Commissioner Manfred later informed Senator Hawley that the players would not be fined, noting that team communication about the caps had been unclear. Giants supporters expressed disappointment with the organization’s handling of the incident, while criticism came from both LGBTQ+ advocates and conservative groups.
