Woman dies after unsafe bungee jump in São Paulo state

Summary

A 21-year-old woman died when a bungee jump at a bridge in Limeira, São Paulo, was performed without a properly secured cord, prompting arrests of three men on homicide charges.

A 21-year-old woman died on Saturday after being released from a bridge in Limeira, São Paulo, without a properly attached bungee cord, according to the state governor’s office. Video shared on social media shows the woman standing near the edge of the Skeleton Bridge Trail, wearing a helmet and with her arms outstretched, while three men lift her and two of them push her off the cliff. The footage appears to show her falling several meters to the ground without any safety line.

"According to the police report, at the time of the jump, the safety equipment was not properly fixed," the governor’s office said. "The victim did not resist the fall and death was confirmed by SAMU teams."

Police initially detained six individuals for questioning, and three men aged 27, 32 and 42 were later arrested on charges of homicide with eventual intent, a Brazilian legal category for dangerous acts that result in death without premeditated intent to kill. The suspects have not been publicly identified. Authorities said investigations are ongoing to clarify the circumstances and assign responsibility.
