Trump and World Leaders Discuss Iran Peace Deal Ahead of G7 Summit

Summary

U.S. President Donald Trump and international officials are preparing for a G7 summit in France as the United States and Iran move toward signing a peace agreement that includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

President Donald Trump arrived in France for the G7 summit after announcing a memorandum of understanding with Iran that aims to end hostilities and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The agreement, slated for a formal signing in Geneva on Friday, includes provisions that Iran will not acquire a nuclear weapon and that the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports will be lifted once the deal is executed.

Vice President JD Vance said the full text of the agreement will be released later this week and warned that some media reports have mischaracterized its terms, particularly claims that it would release billions of dollars in Iranian assets.

French President Emmanuel Macron indicated that French forces, including the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, are prepared to assist in securing the Strait of Hormuz and clearing mines if needed.

In Israel, opposition leader Yair Lapid called for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to resign, criticizing the Israeli government's handling of the deal. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz warned that the Israeli military would respond forcefully if Iran attacks.

U.K. Maritime Trade Operations reiterated that the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports remains in effect until the cease-fire agreement is formally signed.

European leaders, including the United Kingdom’s prime minister, expressed support for the agreement and pledged to work with partners to ensure its durability.
