White House Cracks Down on Anthropic's Fable Model, Stifling Innovation Under Pretext of Security
In a move emblematic of the Trump administration's heavy-handed approach, export restrictions were slapped on Anthropic's Fable AI model, raising concerns about suppression of technological progress under the guise of national security.

On Friday, the U.S. Treasury and White House officials imposed sweeping export controls on Anthropic's Fable and Mythos 5 models, invoking so-called national-security risks. This action, executed in a hasty 24-hour campaign, saw senior officials pressuring the company to withdraw its models, casting doubt on the administration’s commitment to transparent and democratic oversight of technology.
Unnamed administration sources revealed that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, White House Cyber Director Sean Cairncross, and other senior staff repeatedly contacted Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei. These discussions, which included the Commerce Secretary and senior White House aides, were triggered by reports from Amazon—an Anthropic investor—alleging that the model’s safety guardrails could be circumvented. The reliance on corporate whistleblowing, rather than independent review, underscores the administration's alignment with powerful tech interests.
Anthropic initially stood by its safety measures, stating in a blog post that no universal “jailbreak” had been found and that its protections were intentionally robust. However, the company was ultimately forced to comply with the export-control order, which it criticized as disproportionate and lacking in transparency or evidence-based justification.
"Export controls were a last resort after begging them for hours to work with us," a senior White House official said, revealing the administration’s coercive tactics.
This decision has effectively cut off access to the models for all customers, including international users, until the alleged vulnerabilities are addressed. Amazon refused to disclose details of its conversations with the government, hiding behind claims of routine consultation.
The episode exposes the ongoing power struggle between unaccountable regulators and innovative AI developers, as the U.S. government continues to prioritize security theater over genuine progress and public interest.
