Amtrak unveils $8 billion Penn Station redesign amid political scrutiny
Amtrak and its design partner unveiled renderings for an $8 billion redesign of New York’s Penn Station, showing a grand stone façade, higher ceilings and a sunlit concourse. Earlier, elected officials gathered outside the station demanding transparency on the project’s cost, developer selection and community impact, Gothamist reported. Federal officials defended the plan, saying it would modernize the hub while preserving the arena above the tracks.
The new designs, detailed by CBS, add a new Eighth Avenue entrance, expand circulation space by 165 % and target construction to begin before the end of 2027. ABC noted that state and city leaders allocated $8 billion for the overhaul, and PBS reiterated the design features and the construction schedule.
