Alaska election officials bar same-name challenger from Senate primary
The Alaska Division of Elections barred a candidate named Daniel J. Sullivan from the U. S. Senate primary ballot, saying he did not meet the good-faith candidacy requirement. According to CNN, incumbent Senator Dan Sullivan and the National Republican Senatorial Committee urged officials to remove the same-name challenger, arguing the similarity could mislead voters and aid Democratic contender Mary Peltola.
Alaska Public Media later reported that the division issued a preliminary finding that the retired teacher Dan Sullivan was ineligible, a decision the challenger said he would contest. AP News confirmed that the division determined the challenger failed the good-faith test, making him ineligible for the August primary. CNN reiterated the ruling, and CBS News added that elections director cited the intent to confuse voters as the basis for the disqualification. The final action left Daniel J. Sullivan off the ballot, ending the challenge.
