President Trump hosts UFC cage-fighting event on White House South Lawn for 80th birthday

Summary

Donald Trump marked his 80th birthday with a UFC mixed-martial-arts showcase on the White House South Lawn, drawing thousands of spectators and involving significant government resources.

President Donald Trump celebrated his 80th birthday on Sunday with a mixed-martial-arts exhibition featuring seven UFC fights on the White House South Lawn. The event, staged under a metal arch called “The Claw,” was attended by cabinet members, senior officials, Republican lawmakers and more than 4,000 spectators, with additional viewers watching on large screens at the nearby Ellipse.

UFC president Dana White, a personal friend of Trump, described the show as “a one of one event, incredible event. I love it.” White House spokesperson Allison Schuster said the fight “will be one of the most entertaining nights in American history” and called it a fitting tribute during the nation’s semiquincentennial celebrations.

The spectacle coincided with ongoing political challenges, including negotiations to end the Iran conflict and criticism of Trump’s health. A recent Washington Post/ABC News/Ipsos poll found less than half of U.S. adults believe Trump possesses the mental sharpness or physical health required for the presidency. In response, former White House physician Ronny Jackson asserted that Trump’s “stamina, focus, and strength are exceptional,” while White House physician Dr. Sean Barbabella described his health as “excellent.”

The National Park Service disclosed that the event required more than $60 million and tens of thousands of labor hours from seven federal agencies. UFC announced a partnership with World Liberty Financial, a cryptocurrency firm co-owned by the Trump family, to fund a $250,000 bonus pool for winning fighters.

Critics, including Cornell University classics professor Mike Fontaine, likened the display to ancient Roman “bread and circuses,” suggesting it serves as a distraction from economic and foreign-policy issues.
