President Trump to host UFC event on White House South Lawn for his 80th birthday

Summary

The White House will hold a UFC fight card on Sunday, marking the first major professional sporting event on the grounds, despite weather concerns and a recent legal challenge.

The White House is set to host a UFC fight night on Sunday, coinciding with President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday. An octagonal cage and a 92-foot steel structure, nicknamed “the Claw,” have been installed on the South Lawn, creating a temporary arena for seven bouts.

UFC president Dana White said the idea originated with the president, reflecting Trump’s long-standing interest in the promotion. The event, titled “UFC Freedom 250,” will feature a lightweight title unification bout between Ilia Topuria and Justin Gaethje, as well as a co-main-event heavyweight interim title fight between Alex Pereira and Ciryl Gane.

About 4,300 spectators are expected, including roughly 1,200 seats reserved for active-duty military personnel who must meet specific fitness and body-measurement criteria, according to a Pentagon memo. Remaining tickets will be allocated to the president, UFC officials, donors, lobbyists and members of Congress.

A lawsuit filed by the watchdog group Public Integrity Project sought to block the event on the basis that the administration misapplied a rule for national commemorations. A federal judge denied the injunction on Friday.

The National Weather Service has issued a “likely” thunderstorm forecast for the evening of the main event. UFC officials have placed two meteorologists on site to monitor conditions.

During a recent White House media briefing, Office of National Drug Control Policy director Sara Carter presented fighter Derrick “The Black Beast” Lewis with recognition for 75 consecutive clean drug tests. Secretary of State Marco Rubio signed a memorandum of understanding establishing a public-private partnership between the State Department and the UFC, describing the promotion as a venue where diverse audiences gather.

The event proceeds amid mixed reactions, with some critics labeling mixed-martial-arts as a violent sport, while supporters view it as a popular entertainment format.
