Scott Pelley dismissed from CBS News following tense meeting
CBS News has terminated longtime correspondent Scott Pelley one day after a confrontational exchange with new 60 Minutes executive producer Nick Bilton.
CBS News has dismissed Scott Pelley, a veteran correspondent for 60 Minutes, following a tense interaction with the show's new executive producer, Nick Bilton, during a staff meeting. The termination was communicated to Pelley in a letter where Bilton described Pelley’s conduct as a "performative display of hostility" that undermined the collaborative effort needed for the show's future.
In his letter, Bilton stated that Pelley “hijacked” the meeting to criticize him and his qualifications, expressing disappointment that Pelley showed no interest in working together towards the program's success. Following their private discussion, Bilton concluded that Pelley was uninterested in finding a way to move forward collaboratively.
In a memo to the 60 Minutes team, Bilton acknowledged Pelley’s significance to many staff members while noting repeated unsuccessful attempts to engage him constructively. Reports surfaced that during the meeting, Pelley accused CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss of undermining the integrity of the show and questioned Bilton's credentials for his new role.
Pelley, reflecting on his departure, stated that 60 Minutes lost its essence with the recent leadership changes and called out what he described as management's demand for biased reporting. He expressed gratitude towards his colleagues at CBS News, stating his wish for a return to its foundational values of integrity and professionalism. Reports indicate that leaders at CBS News were disappointed by Pelley’s public criticisms despite their efforts to connect with him privately.
