Trial Begins for Romanian Nationals Accused in London Stabbing of Iranian Journalist

Summary

Two Romanian men stand trial in London for the 2024 stabbing of Iranian journalist Pouria Zeraati, with prosecutors alleging the attack was orchestrated on behalf of the Iranian state.

The trial of two Romanian nationals accused of stabbing Iranian journalist Pouria Zeraati commenced at London's Woolwich Crown Court on May 18, 2026. Prosecutors allege that the attack, which occurred in March 2024, was orchestrated by individuals acting on behalf of the Iranian state.

Zeraati, a presenter for the Persian-language broadcaster Iran International, was assaulted near his Wimbledon residence, sustaining three stab wounds to his leg. He was hospitalized and discharged two days later. The prosecution contends that the defendants, Nandito Badea, 21, and George Stana, 25, were recruited to carry out the attack as proxies for Iran. Both men have pleaded not guilty to charges of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and unlawful wounding.

During the proceedings, the court heard that the assailants fled the scene in a vehicle driven by a third individual, later identified as David Andrei, who remains in Romania and is not currently on trial. The trio allegedly abandoned their car and departed the UK via Heathrow Airport shortly after the attack. Prosecutor Duncan Atkinson stated that the assault was a deliberate and planned act of violence intended to inflict serious injury on its target.

The case has drawn significant attention due to concerns over transnational repression and the safety of journalists critical of the Iranian government operating abroad. The trial is expected to continue over the coming weeks.
