LIRR Strike Ends After Tentative Agreement Restores Service
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority and Long Island Rail Road workers faced a looming shutdown as contract talks approached a deadline, AP News reported. The strike began the next day, halting service for the system’s 275,000 daily riders, according to Gothamist and NBC News. During the second and third days, the walkout disrupted commutes for roughly 250,000 passengers, with Governor Kathy Hochul urging renewed talks, as reported by News12 and CBS News.
The National Mediation Board summoned the MTA and unions to resume negotiations, ABC7 noted. On the third day, the MTA and five unions reached a tentative four-year agreement, ending the walkout and allowing service to resume for about 250,000 commuters, according to Gothamist, CBS News and Yahoo News.
