Remains of Italian Divers Repatriated After Maldives Cave Tragedy
An elite team of Finnish divers recovered the bodies of two Italian tourists who died while exploring an underwater cave in the Vaavu Atoll of the Maldives, according to the New York Post. The tragedy involved five Italian nationals, including a university professor and her daughter, who died during the cave exploration, as reported by CBS News and Euronews. Recovery efforts faced challenges due to rough seas, leading Maldivian authorities to suspend operations temporarily.
A Maldivian military diver also died during the search, prompting further suspension of the recovery mission. Authorities later located the bodies of four Italian divers inside the cave, as confirmed by BBC and AP News. Finnish divers successfully recovered two of the bodies, with plans to retrieve the remaining two still underway, according to the latest reports.
