Africa CDC Confirms Ebola Outbreak in Congo's Ituri Province
Africa CDC reports 246 suspected Ebola cases and 65 deaths in Congo's Ituri province, prompting urgent response efforts.
The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has confirmed a new Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo's Ituri province, with 246 suspected cases and 65 deaths reported to date. The outbreak is primarily affecting the Mongwalu and Rwampara health zones, with additional suspected cases in Bunia, the provincial capital. Laboratory tests have confirmed the Ebola virus in 13 of 20 samples tested.
This marks the 17th Ebola outbreak in Congo since the virus was first identified in 1976. The previous outbreak, which concluded five months ago, resulted in 43 deaths.
Africa CDC has expressed concern over the potential for further spread due to factors such as intense population movement, mining-related mobility in Mongwalu, regional insecurity, and the proximity of affected areas to Uganda and South Sudan. In response, the agency is convening an urgent high-level coordination meeting with health authorities from Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan, along with key partners including U.N. agencies and other countries.
