Trump Announces Deployment of 5,000 Additional U.S. Troops to Poland
President Donald Trump has announced the deployment of 5,000 additional U.S. troops to Poland, citing his relationship with Polish President Karol Nawrocki.
President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that the United States will deploy an additional 5,000 troops to Poland, citing his relationship with Polish President Karol Nawrocki.
This decision follows recent moves by the Trump administration to reduce the U.S. military presence in Europe. Last week, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth halted the scheduled deployment of the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, which was expected to rotate through Poland and other countries.
The announcement has caused confusion among NATO allies and defense officials, as it appears to contradict previous plans to decrease troop numbers in Europe.
Polish officials have expressed gratitude for the continued U.S. military presence. Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski thanked Trump for maintaining troop levels, stating, "All's well that ends well." Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz added that Poland would not lose any U.S. troops, emphasizing the strength of Polish-American relations.
The Pentagon has referred questions regarding the deployment to the White House, which has not immediately responded to requests for comment.
Poland, a NATO member, has been a key hub for Western military aid to Ukraine since Russia's invasion in 2022. The U.S. currently maintains approximately 10,000 troops in Poland, and the additional deployment is seen as a reinforcement of NATO's eastern flank amid rising regional tensions.
