Russia Launches Massive Drone and Missile Attacks on Ukraine, Causing Civilian Casualties
Russia conducted extensive drone and missile strikes across Ukraine, resulting in civilian deaths and injuries, particularly in Kyiv.
Russia has launched a series of extensive drone and missile attacks across Ukraine, resulting in significant civilian casualties and infrastructure damage. In Kyiv, at least eight people were killed and 44 injured after a nine-story residential building in the Darnytsia district was demolished. Emergency services reported that a 12-year-old girl was among the deceased, and more than a dozen residents remain missing.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that over 1,560 drones and 56 missiles were launched during the two-day assault, marking one of the largest aerial attacks since the conflict began. He indicated that Russia had "stockpiled drones and missiles over a period of time and deliberately timed the strike to ensure its scale was significant and the challenges for our air defense were as great as possible." Zelensky has instructed Ukraine's Defense Forces and special services to propose possible formats for a response to the strikes.
The attacks also targeted other regions, including Kharkiv, where at least 28 people were injured, and Odesa, where two individuals were wounded. Critical infrastructure suffered damage, with a power substation and a high-voltage power line in Kyiv affected, and a train locomotive hit in the Kharkiv region.
In response to the strikes, Hungary summoned the Russian ambassador after an attack struck the Transcarpathia region, home to a significant Hungarian minority. Hungarian Foreign Minister Anita Orbán described the strikes as "completely unacceptable" and urged Russia to pursue a ceasefire.
These developments come amid recent discussions of potential peace, with Russian President Vladimir Putin suggesting that the war may be nearing its end. However, the scale and intensity of the latest attacks indicate a significant escalation in the conflict.
