Spanish Passenger from Hantavirus-Infected Cruise Tests Positive

Resumen

A Spanish national evacuated from the MV Hondius cruise ship, which is linked to a hantavirus outbreak, has tested positive for the virus while in isolation in Madrid.

A Spanish national who was evacuated from the cruise ship MV Hondius has tested positive for hantavirus and is currently isolating at a hospital in Madrid, as reported by Spain’s Ministry of Health. The individual is among 14 Spaniards who were quarantined at the Gómez Ulla Central Defense Hospital since May 10, following an epidemiological monitoring process initiated due to the outbreak.

The patient was moved to the hospital’s High-Level Isolation Unit for specialized supervision after being identified as a close contact in relation to the outbreak. This individual is the second Spaniard from the cruise to test positive for the virus. In response to the situation, health authorities reassured the public, emphasizing that the case was detected within their existing isolation and control measures, which do not affect the overall risk to the general population.

The hantavirus outbreak has raised concerns after three passengers died following the ship’s departure from Argentina in April. Health authorities worldwide are working to trace and contain the virus, which is typically associated with rodents. Passengers who disembarked at the remote Saint Helena island and at the Canary Islands are being monitored, as symptoms can develop weeks after exposure. Dr. Isaac Bogoch, an infectious disease expert, noted that individuals onboard could show symptoms within three to six weeks post-exposure, suggesting that further positive cases may emerge soon.

Infectious disease experts classify hantavirus as a rare illness that can mimic flu-like symptoms, potentially leading to severe complications such as organ failure.
