Trump Halts 'Project Freedom' After Saudi Arabia Denies Airspace Access

President Donald Trump suspended a naval operation in the Strait of Hormuz after Saudi Arabia refused U.S. military access to its airspace and bases.

President Donald Trump has suspended 'Project Freedom,' a naval operation aimed at escorting ships through the Strait of Hormuz, following Saudi Arabia's refusal to grant U.S. military access to its airspace and bases. The decision came after Saudi officials informed the U.S. that military aircraft would not be permitted to operate from Prince Sultan Airbase or transit Saudi airspace to support the mission.

The abrupt reversal occurred just two days after the operation's announcement, which reportedly surprised Gulf allies. A Saudi source commented, 'The problem with that premise is that things are happening quickly in real time.'

A White House official stated that regional allies were notified in advance, though a Middle Eastern diplomat noted that coordination with Oman occurred only after the public announcement. 'The U.S. made an announcement and then coordinated with us,' the diplomat said, adding, 'We were not upset or angry.'

The suspension of 'Project Freedom' marks a significant setback in U.S. efforts to secure the strategic waterway amid ongoing tensions with Iran. The operation was intended to ensure safe passage for vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments.
