Meta to Lay Off 8,000 Employees Amid Increased AI Investment

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the company will lay off approximately 8,000 employees, attributing the decision to increased spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the company will lay off approximately 8,000 employees, representing about 10% of its workforce, as it increases investment in artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. The layoffs are scheduled to begin on May 20.

"We basically have two major cost centers in the company: compute infrastructure and people-oriented things," Zuckerberg stated during a company town hall. "If we're investing more in one area to serve our community, then that means we have less capital to allocate to the other. So that means we do need to take down the size of the company somewhat."

Zuckerberg emphasized that the layoffs are not related to Meta's shift toward an "AI-native" structure or efforts to build autonomous AI agents. He also did not rule out the possibility of additional job cuts in the future.

"We'll see how all this stuff trends," he said, adding that the company would "be able to share more soon."

Meta has previously reduced its workforce, cutting 11,000 jobs in November 2022 and another 10,000 in subsequent months. As of December 31, the company employed nearly 79,000 people.

The company has also begun tracking employee activity, including clicks and navigation patterns, as part of efforts to train its AI systems. These measures have sparked internal criticism, with employees voicing concerns on company message boards.

Chief Financial Officer Susan Li commented on the company's long-term size, stating, "We don't really know what the optimal size of the company will be in the future," citing rapid changes in AI capabilities.

Meta's increased focus on AI investment reflects a broader trend in the tech industry, where companies are reallocating resources toward AI development, often resulting in workforce reductions.
