A Hawaii anesthesiologist has been convicted of attempted manslaughter for attacking his wife during a cliffside hike.

A Honolulu jury found 47-year-old Gerhardt Konig guilty of attempted manslaughter based on extreme mental or emotional disturbance. The verdict was delivered after more than eight hours of deliberation.

The incident occurred in March 2025 on the Pali Puka Trail in Oahu. Prosecutors alleged that Konig attempted to push his wife, Arielle, off a cliff, tried to stab her with a syringe, and struck her with a rock. The attack was interrupted by two hikers who heard her screams.

Konig pleaded not guilty, claiming self-defense. He testified that his wife attacked him first and that he struck her in response.

The jury's decision to convict on the lesser charge was influenced by evidence suggesting Konig acted under extreme emotional disturbance.

Konig faces up to 20 years in prison, with sentencing scheduled for August 13. His attorney has announced plans to appeal the conviction.
