Pope Leo XIV Calls for Global Peace in First Easter Address
In his inaugural Easter message, Pope Leo XIV urged world leaders to choose dialogue over conflict, emphasizing the need to end global violence.
Pope Leo XIV delivered his first Easter address on April 5, 2026, from St. Peter's Basilica, emphasizing a call for global peace amid ongoing conflicts. Addressing a congregation of over 50,000 in St. Peter's Square, the pontiff declared, "Let those who have weapons lay them down! Let those who have the power to unleash wars choose peace!"
He further urged for peace achieved through dialogue rather than force, cautioning against the growing desensitization to violence and the loss of countless lives. Pope Leo announced a prayer vigil for peace to be held on April 11, inviting global participation.
During the Easter Vigil on April 4, the pope personally carried the cross through all 14 Stations of the Cross at the Colosseum in Rome, a practice not performed by a pontiff in decades. This act underscored his commitment to addressing global suffering and promoting peace.
Pope Leo XIV's Easter message resonated with faith leaders worldwide, who echoed his calls for peace amid ongoing violence.
