U.S. Airlines Raised Fares and Fees Due to Jet Fuel Price Surge
Initially, United Airlines responded to escalating jet fuel prices influenced by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East by raising its checked baggage fees by $10. Soon after, United introduced a three-tier fare structure for premium cabins to further offset the increased fuel expenses. Other major U. S. carriers, including JetBlue and Delta Air Lines, followed suit by increasing their checked baggage fees, with Delta setting the first bag fee at $45 and the second at $55 for domestic and select short-haul international flights.
Later, several major U. S. airlines collectively raised fares and fees as jet fuel prices continued to surge. Despite these increases, consumer demand for air travel remained strong. The fee hikes and fare adjustments reflected the airlines' efforts to manage rising operational costs driven by fuel price volatility linked to Middle East conflicts.
