SoftBank Group Corp. is planning to build a $500 billion AI data center complex in Ohio, aiming to develop the largest construction project in the U.S.
The proposed facility is set to be constructed on the site of a former uranium enrichment complex owned by the U.S. Department of Energy. The data center is expected to have a power capacity of 10 gigawatts, with the first phase utilizing approximately 800 megawatts and costing between $30 billion and $40 billion. Completion of this initial phase is targeted for early 2028.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick announced the project alongside SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son and Energy Secretary Chris Wright, stating, "We are going to do the largest construction project in the country."
This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance AI infrastructure in the United States, with SoftBank collaborating with OpenAI and Oracle on the $500 billion Stargate project, which aims to establish a nationwide advanced AI network.
The Ohio facility is expected to play a significant role in this endeavor, contributing to the development of AI computing capabilities and supporting the growth of the technology sector in the region.
