ACCC Summons Fuel Companies Over Rapid Petrol Price Increases

Summary

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has called major fuel suppliers and retailers to an urgent meeting to address recent sharp increases in petrol prices, amid concerns of potential price gouging following the Middle East conflict.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has convened an urgent meeting with major fuel suppliers and retailers, including Chevron, BP, and Ampol, to address the recent sharp increases in petrol prices. This action follows consumer concerns over sudden price spikes and distribution issues, particularly in regional areas, amid the ongoing Middle East conflict.

ACCC Commissioner Anna Brakey emphasized the commission's commitment to monitoring pricing behavior closely since the outbreak of hostilities in the Middle East. She stated, "We know the impact that higher prices are having on Australian consumers. We have been watching pricing behaviour closely since the outbreak of recent hostilities in the Middle East and will take action against any case of misleading consumers about the reason for the steep and rapid increase in prices by individual retailers or any breaches of the competition provisions."

Treasurer Jim Chalmers underscored the government's stance against unjustified price hikes, noting, "Today the regulator will get a chance to make the retailers and suppliers justify their prices. I've made it very clear that if they find evidence of misconduct, we expect the ACCC to throw the book at them."

In response to the situation, the ACCC has announced plans to provide weekly market updates to enhance transparency and scrutiny of retailers' behavior. The commission has also indicated its readiness to take decisive action against any misleading or anti-competitive conduct in the fuel market.

Consumers are encouraged to utilize available resources, such as fuel price apps and websites, to compare prices and identify retailers offering more competitive rates. The ACCC continues to monitor the situation closely and urges retailers to ensure that any price increases are justified and communicated transparently to consumers.
