NASA Prepares for April 1 Launch of Artemis II Moon Mission

Summary

NASA is set to launch Artemis II on April 1, marking the first crewed lunar mission since 1972, with a 10-day journey around the Moon.

NASA is preparing to launch Artemis II on April 1, 2026, aiming to send four astronauts on a 10-day mission around the Moon. This will be the first crewed lunar mission since Apollo 17 in 1972. The crew includes NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen.

The Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and Orion spacecraft were rolled out to Launch Complex 39B at Kennedy Space Center on March 20, following repairs to address a helium flow issue in the upper stage.

NASA completed a Flight Readiness Review on March 12, confirming the mission is on track for the April 1 launch date.

The Artemis II mission will test Orion's life support systems and pave the way for future lunar landings, including Artemis III, which aims to land astronauts on the Moon's surface in 2027.
