Indonesia Enforced Under-16 Social Media Ban and Summoned Google, Meta
Indonesia announced a regulation to restrict social media access for users under 16 on high-risk platforms, aiming to protect children from online threats such as cyberbullying and digital addiction. The government began deactivating accounts of underage users on platforms including YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, Threads, X, Bigo Live, and Roblox.
Following the enforcement of this ban, Indonesia summoned major tech companies Google and Meta for failing to comply with the new regulation. The government cited concerns over online safety and child protection, emphasizing violations of national law and demanding adherence to the under-16 social media access restrictions.
