NASA's DART Mission First to Alter Asteroid System's Solar Orbit
NASA's DART mission targeted the binary asteroid system consisting of Dimorphos and its larger companion Didymos. The spacecraft impacted Dimorphos, successfully shortening its orbit around Didymos. This marked the first time a human-made object altered the trajectory of a celestial body. Initial analyses also uncovered active material exchange between the two asteroids, providing new insights into their dynamic interactions and the YORP effect.
Subsequently, the mission demonstrated that the impact not only changed Dimorphos' orbit around Didymos but also subtly shifted the entire binary system's orbit around the Sun. This achievement represents the first human-made alteration of a celestial body's solar trajectory. The findings have important implications for planetary defense and the understanding of near-Earth asteroid dynamics.
