Ghanaian Peacekeepers Injured in Lebanon Amid Regional Tensions
Two Ghanaian UN peacekeepers were critically injured in a missile attack on their base in southern Lebanon, prompting international condemnation and calls for accountability.
On March 6, 2026, the headquarters of Ghana's United Nations peacekeeping battalion in Al Qawzah, southern Lebanon, was struck by missile attacks, resulting in critical injuries to two soldiers and trauma to a third. The Officers' Mess facility was also destroyed by fire.
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) condemned the attack, emphasizing that targeting peacekeepers performing Security Council-mandated tasks is unacceptable and may constitute a war crime. UN Secretary-General António Guterres also condemned the incident, underscoring the need for the safety and security of UN personnel to be respected at all times.
Ghana's Foreign Ministry lodged a formal protest with the United Nations, calling for a full, immediate, impartial, and transparent investigation to hold those responsible accountable. The attack occurred amid escalating hostilities between Israeli forces and Hezbollah in the region.
In a separate incident in December 2025, Ghanaian travelers, including members of an official delegation, were detained and subjected to questioning at Israel's Ben Gurion International Airport, leading Ghana to protest the treatment as humiliating and degrading.
These events have prompted calls for Ghana to maintain a neutral stance and prioritize diplomacy over alignment in regional conflicts, drawing on its longstanding tradition of peacekeeping and non-alignment.
