US and Israel Intensify Strikes on Iran Amid Escalating Middle East Tensions

Summary

The United States and Israel have launched coordinated military strikes targeting Iranian missile launchers and air defense systems, while Iran has closed the Strait of Hormuz, significantly impacting global oil markets.

The United States and Israel have intensified their military operations against Iran, targeting approximately 300 missile launchers and various air defense systems within Iranian territory. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that hundreds of fighter jets and aircraft have conducted simultaneous strikes in Iran and Lebanon, deploying around 4,000 munitions since the operation commenced over the weekend.

In response, Iran has closed the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime passage through which about 20% of the world's oil supply transits. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has warned that any ship attempting to pass through the strait will be attacked, effectively halting commercial traffic and causing oil prices to surge. Major shipping companies have suspended operations in the region due to safety concerns.

The conflict has resulted in significant civilian casualties. In Minab, southern Iran, thousands attended the mass funeral of victims from an airstrike on a girls' elementary school, which killed up to 168 people, including many children. In Lebanon's Tyre district, three paramedics were killed and six wounded while recovering victims after an airstrike, according to the World Health Organization.

The United States has taken measures to protect its interests and allies in the region. President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. Navy would escort tankers through the Strait of Hormuz if necessary and ordered the United States Development Finance Corporation to provide insurance for maritime trade in the Gulf region. Additionally, the U.S. State Department has urged American citizens to leave the Middle East immediately due to escalating safety risks.

International reactions have been swift. French President Emmanuel Macron ordered the deployment of the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle to the Mediterranean and additional defense systems to Cyprus, emphasizing that any French action would be strictly defensive. At an emergency United Nations Security Council meeting, Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the attacks by all parties and warned of a potential broader conflict if de-escalation efforts fail.

The situation remains fluid, with ongoing military actions and diplomatic efforts unfolding across the region.
