Election observers have reported significant instances of 'family voting' during the Gorton and Denton by-election, prompting concerns over electoral integrity.
Democracy Volunteers, an election monitoring organization, observed 'family voting'—where one individual influences another's vote within the polling booth—in 68% of the 22 polling stations they monitored. This practice, criminalized under the Ballot Secrecy Act 2023, was noted in 32 instances among 545 voters observed, marking the highest level recorded by the group in a decade.
"Today we have seen concerningly high levels of family voting in Gorton and Denton," said John Ault, director of Democracy Volunteers. "Based on our assessment of today's observations, we have seen the highest levels of family voting at any election in our 10-year history of observing elections in the UK."
Manchester City Council, responsible for overseeing the election, stated that polling staff are trained to detect undue influence and reported no such issues during voting hours. A council spokesperson expressed disappointment that concerns were raised post-election, emphasizing that immediate action could have been taken if issues had been reported during polling.
Political figures have responded to the reports. Labour Party Chair Anna Turley described the findings as "extremely worrying and concerning," while Green Party leader Zack Polanski indicated support for an investigation if recommended by authorities. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage suggested the incidents raise questions about the integrity of the democratic process in certain areas.
The Electoral Commission acknowledged awareness of the report and encouraged individuals with evidence of electoral offences to report them to the police.
The Gorton and Denton by-election concluded with Green Party candidate Hannah Spencer securing victory, marking a significant milestone for the party.
