Gorton and Denton By-Election Results Expected Amid Tight Three-Way Race

Résumé

Votes are being counted in the Gorton and Denton by-election, with a close contest anticipated between Labour, Reform UK, and the Green Party.

Votes are currently being counted in the Gorton and Denton by-election, with results expected in the early hours of Friday morning. The contest is anticipated to be closely fought between Labour, Reform UK, and the Green Party.

The Green Party has expressed confidence in their performance. A party source stated, "We feel like we've thrown everything at this election. We've given it our all. I think at the very least we can say we've given Labour the scare of their lives in what not so long ago was considered one of their safest seats in the country."

Election monitoring group Democracy Volunteers has raised concerns about "concerningly high levels" of family voting observed during the by-election. Family voting occurs when a person casting a ballot is accompanied by someone intending to influence their vote, which is an offence under electoral law. The group reported witnessing such instances in 15 of the 22 polling stations they observed.

Manchester City Council, responsible for overseeing the election, responded to these claims, stating that polling station staff are trained to identify undue influence on voters. A spokesperson for the acting returning officer said, "No such issues have been reported today. If Democracy Volunteers were so concerned about alleged issues they could and should have raised them with us during polling hours so that immediate action could be taken."

The Gorton and Denton constituency has been a Labour stronghold for decades, with a 13,000 majority from the 2024 general election. However, the current by-election is considered unpredictable, with analysts suggesting a tight three-way race between Labour, Reform UK, and the Green Party. The outcome is expected to have significant implications for the political landscape.
