JWST Provides First 3D Map of Uranus's Upper Atmosphere
Initially, the James Webb Space Telescope provided the first three-dimensional mapping of Uranus's auroras, revealing new insights into the planet's unique magnetic field and atmospheric dynamics. Subsequently, astronomers used the telescope to create the first detailed 3D map of Uranus's upper atmosphere, which showed temperature peaks, variations in ion density, and auroral structures influenced by the planet's magnetic field. Later, the telescope captured unprecedented images of the auroras in Uranus's upper atmosphere, further enhancing understanding of the planet's magnetic environment and atmospheric behavior. Most recently, the James Webb Space Telescope delivered the first three-dimensional mapping of Uranus's ionosphere, confirming temperature variations and auroral structures shaped by the planet's unique magnetic field. An international team of astronomers, including Paola Tiranti from Northumbria University, contributed to this research. The findings were presented from Bucharest, Romania, marking a significant advancement in the study of Uranus's atmospheric phenomena and magnetic field.
