Ondangwa Prosecutor Dies After Acid Attack; Case Upgraded to Murder

Ondangwa regional prosecutor Justine Shiweda has died following an acid attack, leading authorities to upgrade the case to murder.
Shiweda, 31, was attacked on October 17, 2025, outside her home in Ondangwa. Assailants shot her multiple times and doused her with a corrosive substance. She had been hospitalized since the attack and succumbed to her injuries on Saturday in Windhoek.
Oshana police commander Naftal Sakaria confirmed her death, stating, "Yes, I can confirm. She passed on this morning in Windhoek."
The attack is believed to be linked to a high-profile case involving former police officer Abner Mateus, who allegedly orchestrated the assault after Shiweda denied him bail in a fraud case. Six suspects, including Ondangwa-based medical doctor Fillemon Nakanduungile, have been arrested in connection with the attack.
Shiweda's father, Severus Shiweda, expressed his grief and called for swift justice, saying, "I want justice to be served. They must be tried very fast and get serious punishment. That's my plea to the government."
Prosecutor General Martha Imalwa described Shiweda as a dedicated public servant, stating, "What you have shown me for that time, I have come to know you, are a trustworthy and dedicated person. You surrendered your life to serve those who cannot speak for themselves, the victims of crime."
Oshana governor Hofni Iipinge condemned the attack, urging prosecutors to continue their duties without fear: "Prosecutors should not be intimidated by anybody. I am encouraging you to do your job so we can uphold justice in this country."
The case has been upgraded from attempted murder to murder following Shiweda's death. The suspects remain in custody as investigations continue.
